Hello, !
Happy Valentine’s Day!

This is the second most popular holiday in the US, with nearly 200 million cards sent annually! So, it seems appropriate to take a look at our Valentine's Day expressions of love in today's ADHD Hint.

Usually on Valentine's Day we have expectations that someone will be expressing love to us or that we will be expressing love to another person. I'm suggesting that a third type of Valentine's Day expression of love might be even more important to consider. I've learned that we are only able to love another person fully and non-judgmentally after we give the gift of love and compassion to ourselves

That’s often hard to do for folks with ADHD, perhaps because of our history. One researcher wrote that children with ADHD experience one to two negative interactions with the people in their lives every minute. Imagine the toll that takes on a child’s ability to form a positive self-image! And children grow up to be adults who continue to hear in their heads those same critical voices.

But we can start to change those voices through self-compassion!

Dr. Kristen Neff, pioneer in the study of self-compassion, has written, ". . . people who can first give themselves emotional support and validation will be in a better position to be giving, accepting, and generous to their partners."

She also wrote:
When you have a healthy level of self-compassion, you're as kind, considerate and forgiving to yourself as you would be to anyone you cared about. You don't beat yourself up or become defensive, depressed and angry when you face the setbacks we all encounter at one point or another.

That’s worth remembering on Valentine’s Day! You might want to send a Valentine's greeting to yourself, as well as to others who are important in your life.

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Until next Wednesday!

Linda
