Hello, !
This is the thirty-first and final in a series of brief, daily emails I'm sending during October -- global ADHD Awareness Month. Each features a quote that relates to ADHD
and neurodiversity.
Thanks for sticking with me for thirty-one days! Also, thank you to those of you who have emailed me this month; I've really appreciated the feedback. I hope together we are helping to reduce the misunderstandings about ADHD and the stigma that often surrounds it.
Many adults with ADHD feel they are living a
charade. They construct intricate facades designed to hide the personality traits that cause them the most shame, then they spend their days fearing someone will expose them as a fraud. There is a better, more authentic way to live.
One of the goals of Global ADHD Awareness Month is to spread the latest information about ADHD, reduce the stigma by sharing the facts, and create a climate in which we can shed our masks and be the creative, amazing people each of us really
is.
These are the masks Linda Roggli identifies in her article as being worn by some folks with ADHD: - The Perfectionist
- The Life of the Party
- The Intellect
- The Loser/The
Black Sheep
- The Space Cadet
- The Superhero
- The Rebel/The Hothead
Does one or more of those masks sound like you or someone you know and love?
Just like a Halloween mask serves a purpose on this holiday, so do our masks serve a purpose in making us feel safe and protected. We can be grateful for what they have done for us.
But just like we need to remove our masks, sometimes slowly
and carefully, to enjoy the candy in our trick or treat bags, so we can begin to remove our psychological masks and acknowledge and appreciate who we really are. It may take some time and a lot of self-compassion, but the discovery that each of us is a remarkable and unique individual is the biggest treat of all!
Until next Wednesday, Linda
